The Community Firewood Bank

Building Warmth, Building Community.
Status: Active & Urgent
Partners: Green Heat Alliance, Redwood Forest Foundation Inc. (RFFI), Tan Oak Park

The Community Firewood Bank is a critical mutual aid service that converts hazardous fuels from local forest restoration into heating security for Northern Mendocino residents. By processing and distributing firewood to elders and families in need, we turn wildfire hazards into a vital winter resource.

We are proud to announce that the Green Heat Alliance selected NM-ERA for a grant to expand our operations at Tan Oak Park. However, due to administrative delays, the release of these funds has been paused.

While the funding is on hold, the cold is not. This delay makes community involvement more critical than ever to keep our neighbors warm this winter.

Your donation provides more than just wood; it provides safety, comfort, and peace of mind. Every dollar goes directly to purchasing fuel, maintaining equipment, and delivering wood to those who need it most. This year we are self funded while we wait and try for the next round of funding. Your help is needed and appreciated.

$50

Helps purchase fuel for the delivery truck and maintain our chainsaws, as well as other maintenance related projects.

$100

Would cover about 1/3 of a cord, or more safety gear, hydrants, and other dire needs.

$350

Gathers a full cord of wood and delivers it to a local family warm to stay warm for a month+.

$500

Would allow us to replace broken equipment and hire staff to maintain the grant requirements.

Tan Oak Park Restoration

A Hub for Resilience.
Status: In Development
Partners:

We are transforming the beloved Tan Oak Park into a regional center for forest health, education, and emergency readiness. This project moves beyond simple maintenance to establish the park as a permanent infrastructure hub for Northern Mendocino.

Current Infrastructure Upgrades

Thanks to recent support from the California Fire Foundation, we are able to do work on a couple projects:

  • Fire Water Tank Installed: Establishing a dedicated water source for fire suppression efforts in the neighboring communities.
  • Dangerous Tree Removal: We received the funding to begin our hazardous tree removal and shaded fuel break projects.

Future Vision:Workforce Training Center

Our long-term Master Plan includes the development of a training facility to host:

  • Wildland Fire Safety Certification courses.
  • Forestry & Restoration Workshops for local workforce development.
  • Community Gatherings that foster social resilience and connectivity.
